Thousands of 4WDers every year make their way up to Cape York for the annual tourist season, which runs roughly between Easter and November. In a region where the seasons come one of two ways – hot and Dry, or hot and Wet – there’s only one real choice for exploring, and that’s the Dry. In the wet, tropical monsoon weather hammers the Cape York Peninsula, flooding rivers and making roads impassable. In the Dry, the coastal area north of Cairns is one of the most stunning places in Australia – if it’s open and accessible. See, the CREB track has this infamous reputation about it, and it’s up for debate as to whether it’s for a good reason or not. Mention the CREB around a campfire and images of Malaysian Rainforest Challenge-type winch recoveries and endless bogholes come to mind, but it is a deserved stigma or not
