His characters have been referred to as Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Cats and Dogs. Lowry's status as one of the major British artists of the 20th Century was reinforced when the painting "Going to the Match" was sold at Auction for a record £1.9 million. The Lowry Centre opened in 2000. Set in the newly developed Salford Quays this marvel of modern architecture hosts the vast majority of Lowry's work.
